Potential for Screening for Pancreatic Exocrine Insufficiency Using the Fecal Elastase-1 Test.
Domínguez-Muñoz JE, et al. Dig Dis Sci 2017 - Review. PMID 28315028
We have reviewed current evidence in order to compare the utility of these functional diagnostic techniques with the fecal elastase-1 (FE-1) test in the following three scenarios: screening for PEI in patients presenting with symptoms suggestive of pancreatic disease, such as abdominal pain or diarrhea; determining the presence of PEI in patients with an established diagnosis of pancreatic disease, such as chronic pancreatitis or cystic fibrosis; determining exocrine status in disorders not commonly tested for PEI, but which have a known association with this disorder. Evidence suggests the FE-1 test is reliable for the evaluation of pancreatic function in many pancreatic and non-pancreatic disorders. ...

Neutrophil elastase in the tumor microenvironment.
Lerman I and Hammes SR. Steroids 2018 - Review. PMID 29155217 Free PMC article.
Neutrophil elastase may indeed be a driver of tumorigenesis, since genetic deletion and pharmacological inhibition markedly reduces tumor burden and metastatic potential in numerous preclinical studies. ...We conclude with a brief overview of neutrophil elastase inhibitors and discuss their potential use in cancer therapy....

Neutrophil elastase in bronchiectasis.
Gramegna A, et al. Respir Res 2017 - Review. PMID 29258516 Free PMC article.
The role of neutrophil elastase (NE) is poorly understood in bronchiectasis because of the lack of preclinical data and so most of the assumptions made about NE inhibitor potential benefit is based on data from CF. ...

Spectroscopic and molecular docking studies on the interaction between spermidine and pancreatic elastase.
Sadeghi-Kaji S, et al. Int J Biol Macromol 2019. PMID 30880056
In this study, the impact of spermidine on the stability, conformation and activity of elastase was investigated at the pH of 8.5 (the optimum pH for elastase) and different temperatures (303, 313, and 323 K) using UV-vis spectrophotometry, Spectrofluorimetry, circular dichroism, and enzyme activity measurements. ...Spectrofluorometric results proved that with the addition of spermidine to the protein solution, the emission severity of elastase was extremely reduced. ...

Pancreatic elastase in human serum. Determination by radioimmunoassay.
Geokas MC, et al. J Biol Chem 1977. PMID 833129 Free article.
This study demonstrates that a serine endopeptidase of pancreatic origin (elastase 2) circulates in human blood. A specific and highly sensitive radioimmunoassay has been developed for pancreatic elastase 2 in human serum. ...The assay has been shown to be specific for elastase 2. Human pancreatic elastase 1, anionic trypsin, chymotrypsin I, and chymotrypsin II do not cross-react in this assay system. ...

The role of fecal elastase-1 in detecting exocrine pancreatic disease.
Leeds JS, et al. Nat Rev Gastroenterol Hepatol 2011 - Review. PMID 21629239
A reliable, patient-friendly, cheap and easy to use test for exocrine pancreatic disease is yet to be established; however, in many countries the main (and often only available) method of assessment of exocrine pancreatic function is the fecal-elastase-1 test. This Review examines the role of fecal-elastase-1 testing in detecting exocrine pancreatic insufficiency in a number of gastrointestinal and nongastrointestinal conditions and determines the value of pancreatic enzyme supplementation in these settings....

Elastase Exocytosis by Airway Neutrophils Is Associated with Early Lung Damage in Children with Cystic Fibrosis.
Margaroli C, et al. Am J Respir Crit Care Med 2019. PMID 30281324 Free PMC article.
In adolescents and adults with CF, airway neutrophils actively exocytose the primary granule protease elastase (NE), whose extracellular activity correlates with lung damage. ...

Effect of pancreatic and leukocyte elastase on hydraulic conductivity in lung interstitial segments.
Houtz PK, et al. J Appl Physiol (1985) 2004. PMID 15298987 Free article.
The elastase-induced response in flow was independent of both albumin concentration and mean interstitial pressure. Leukocyte elastase (5 units/dl) produced flow responses similar to those of 0.25 g/dl pancreatic elastase. The increased flow of leukocyte elastase was reduced by a subsequent flow with 0.25 g/dl pancreatic elastase but enhanced by a subsequent flow with a 10-fold lower concentration. ...
