Biomechanical behavior of 2-implant- and single-implant-retained mandibular overdentures with conventional or mini implants.
Pisani MX, et al. J Prosthet Dent 2018. PMID 29703669
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The use of single or mini dental implants to retain mandibular overdentures is still questionable. PURPOSE: The purpose of this finite element analysis (FEA) study was to investigate the biomechanical behavior of 2- and single-implant-retained mandibular overdentures with conventional or mini implants. ...The mini implant overdentures presented lower stress values on the implants, housing or O-ring, and peri-implant bone than did the conventional implant overdentures, regardless of the number of implants. ...

Prognosis of implants and abutment teeth under combined tooth-implant-supported and solely implant-supported double-crown-retained removable dental prostheses.
Rammelsberg P, et al. Clin Oral Implants Res 2014 - Clinical Trial. PMID 23730776
OBJECTIVE: Objective of this study was to evaluate the incidence of complications in dental implants and abutment teeth used for combined tooth-implant- and solely implant-supported double crown-retained removable dental prostheses (RDPs). ...RESULTS: After a median observation period of 2.7 years for the RDPs, six implants failed and eleven implants were diagnosed with peri-implantitis. ...

Survival rates of teeth, implants, and double crown-retained removable dental prostheses: a systematic literature review.
Koller B, et al. Int J Prosthodont 2011 - Review. PMID 21479275
The survival rates of implants supporting prostheses in the mandible were between 97% and 100% after an observation period between 3 and 10.4 years. ...Teeth and implants supporting prostheses in the maxilla, as well as the RDPs themselves, demonstrated a survival rate of 100% after 3.2 years. ...

A Current Perspective on Screw-Retained Single-Implant Restorations: A Review of Pertinent Literature
Priest G. J Esthet Restor Dent 2017 - Review. PMID 28112854
The overriding remaining indication for cement-retained restorations is to compensate for angled implants. CONCLUSIONS: Screw-retained single-implant crowns should be reconsidered for many clinical situations for the following reasons: Predictable retention and retrievability No potential for the biologic consequences associated with residual cement As with cement-retained restorations, the choice between metal ceramics or all ceramics Only one margin, at the implant/abutment interface A single abutment/crown ceramic margin that can extend gingivally to the implant interface Nearly imperceptible blend of a composite resin in ceramic abutment access openings One component instead of two, which may simplify the restorative process CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Innovations in implant and ceramic technology now give screw-retained prostheses the potential for esthetic, functional, and biologic outcomes that are comparable to those for cement-retained prostheses, while providing the advantages of predictable retrievability and avoidance of residual cement. Angled implants, however, remain a major indication for cement-retained single-implant prostheses. (J Esthet Restor Dent 29:161-171, 2017)....

Mechanical attachment of soft tissue to dental and maxillofacial implants with mesh structures: an experiment in percutaneous model.
Asoda S, et al. J Biomed Mater Res B Appl Biomater 2013. PMID 23281217
Four kinds of implant specimens were prepared - TI implants made of titanium cylinders, HA implants of hydroxyapatite-coated titanium, TI-Mesh implants with a titanium mesh covering a groove machined around a titanium cylinder, and similar HA-Mesh implants with a hydroxyapatite-coated mesh. ...The detachments of the implants were examined during the experimental period of 4 weeks. Survived implants were subjected to mechanical tests for the attachment strength and histological examinations. ...

Characterization of Effective Orifice Areas of Mitral Prosthetic Heart Valves: An In-Vitro Study
Evin M, et al. J Heart Valve Dis 2017. PMID 30207118
For mono-leaflet prostheses (Medtronic Hall 7700, size 25 to 31 mm) 2.29 and 3.49; for bi-leaflet prostheses (St. Jude Medical Master and Master HP, sizes 25 to 33 mm and On-X valve, sizes 27-29 mm) 1.34 and 4.74 cm2; for porcine bioprostheses (Medtronic Mosaic CINCH, sizes 25 to 31 mm and St. ...CONCLUSIONS: The present study has provided normal reference values of EOAs for several frequently used mitral prostheses. This information may be helpful for identifying and quantifying prosthetic valve dysfunction and prosthesis-patient mismatch....

Shape transformable bifurcated stents
Kim T and Lee YG. Sci Rep 2018. PMID 30224641 Free PMC article.
Non-invasive delivery of artificial implants, stents or devices in patients is vital for rapid and successful recovery. Unfortunately, because the delivery passage is often narrower than the size of the delivered object, a compromise between the shape that is effective at the targeted location and a thin form that allows smooth unobstructed travel to the destination is needed. ...
