The Volatile Chemical Compositions of the Essential Oil/SPME and Enzyme Inhibitory and Radical Scavenging Activities of Solvent Extracts and the Essential oils from Coronilla orientalis Miller and C. varia L. grows in Turkey.
Renda G, Özel A, Barut B, Korkmaz B, Yayli N. Renda G, et al. Iran J Pharm Res. 2019 Fall;18(4):1831-1842. doi: 10.22037/ijpr.2019.1100802. Iran J Pharm Res. 2019. PMID: 32184850 Free PMC article.
The volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of two Coronilla species (Coronilla orientalis Miller and Coronilla varia L.) obtained by hydrodistillation (HD) and solid phase microextraction (SPME) techniques were identified by GC-FID/MS. The major compounds identified in the SPME extracts were limonene (43.4%) in Coronilla orientalis (C. orientalis), (Z)-β-ocimene and (E)-β-ocimene (34.3% and 32.4%) in Coronilla varia (C. varia), whereas, the essential oils of C. orientalis and C. varia were rich with γ-terpinene (22.4%) and phytol (30.7%), respectively. ...

Systematics and phylogeography of the widely distributed African skink Trachylepis varia species complex.
Weinell JL, Bauer AM. Weinell JL, et al. Mol Phylogenet Evol. 2018 Mar;120:103-117. doi: 10.1016/j.ympev.2017.11.014. Epub 2017 Dec 9. Mol Phylogenet Evol. 2018. PMID: 29233705
The taxonomic history of T. varia has been complicated and its broad geographic distribution and considerable phenotypic variation has made taxonomic revision difficult, leading earlier taxonomists to suggest that T. varia is a species complex. ...We focus our systematic discussion on the southern African members of the T. varia complex, revive Trachylepis damarana (Peters, 1870) and T. laevigata (Peters, 1869), and designate lectotypes for T.damarana and T. varia....

Evaluation of Goniometry and Electrogoniometry of Carpus and Elbow Joints in the Barred Owl (Strix varia).
Gjeltema JL, Degernes LA, Buckanoff HD, Marcellin-Little DJ. Gjeltema JL, et al. J Avian Med Surg. 2018 Dec 1;32(4):267-278. doi: 10.1647/2017-311. J Avian Med Surg. 2018. PMID: 31112639
Elbow and carpus joints in flexed and extended positions from 10 orthopedically normal wings of 6 adult wild barred owls (Strix varia) were evaluated with the animals under general anesthesia using a modified universal plastic goniometer and an electrogoniometer. ...

Intron characterization and their potential as molecular markers for population studies in the scallops Aequipecten opercularis and Mimachlamys varia.
Arias A, Freire R, Méndez J, Insua A. Arias A, et al. Hereditas. 2009 May;146(2):46-57. doi: 10.1111/j.1601-5223.2008.02075.x. Hereditas. 2009. PMID: 19490165 Free article.
The population survey included four localities from Spain and one from Northern Ireland for A. opercularis and two Spanish localities for M. varia. ...In M. varia, H(o) per locus ranged from 0.172 to 0.391 and the two localities showed similar H(o) values (0.255 and 0.293). All population-locus combinations were in agreement with Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, except two loci of M. varia that showed a strong heterozygote deficit in the two localities examined. ...

The Effect of Manual Restraint on Physiological Parameters in Barred Owls ( Strix varia ).

Karyotype and chromosomal location of 18S-28S and 5S ribosomal DNA in the scallops Pecten maximus and Mimachlamys varia (Bivalvia: Pectinidae).
Insua A, López-Piñón MJ, Freire R, Méndez J. Insua A, et al. Genetica. 2006 Mar;126(3):291-301. doi: 10.1007/s10709-005-7408-7. Genetica. 2006. PMID: 16636923
This work describes the karyotype and chromosomal location of the ribosomal DNA (rDNA) of Pecten maximus and Mimachlamys varia, two commercial scallop species from Europe. ...PCR amplification of the 5S rDNA unit yielded a single product of about 460 bp (P. maximus) and 450 bp (M. varia), that used as probe revealed a 5S rDNA site on a telocentric pair in P. maximus and a subtelocentric pair in M. varia. ...

Complete mitochondrial genome sequences of the northern spotted owl (Strix occidentalis caurina) and the barred owl (Strix varia; Aves: Strigiformes: Strigidae) confirm the presence of a duplicated control region.
Hanna ZR, Henderson JB, Sellas AB, Fuchs J, Bowie RCK, Dumbacher JP. Hanna ZR, et al. PeerJ. 2017 Oct 10;5:e3901. doi: 10.7717/peerj.3901. eCollection 2017. PeerJ. 2017. PMID: 29038757 Free PMC article.
We report here the successful assembly of the complete mitochondrial genomes of the northern spotted owl (Strix occidentalis caurina) and the barred owl (S. varia). ...Strix occidentalis caurina and S. varia exhibited an average of 10.74% (8.68% uncorrected p-distance) divergence across the non-tRNA mitochondrial genes....

Whole-Genome Analysis of Introgression Between the Spotted Owl and Barred Owl (Strix occidentalis and Strix varia, Respectively; Aves: Strigidae) in Western North America.
Hanna ZR, Dumbacher JP, Bowie RCK, Henderson JB, Wall JD. Hanna ZR, et al. G3 (Bethesda). 2018 Dec 10;8(12):3945-3952. doi: 10.1534/g3.118.200754. G3 (Bethesda). 2018. PMID: 30355766 Free PMC article.
As the barred owl (Strix varia; Aves: Strigiformes: Strigidae) expands throughout western North America, hybridization between barred and spotted owls (Strix varia and S. occidentalis, respectively), if abundant, may lead to genetic swamping of the endangered spotted owl. ...Plumage characteristics of western S. varia that suggested admixture with S. occidentalis appear unrelated to S. occidentalis ancestry and may instead reflect local selection....
