Fiberoptic bronchoscopy in the neonate

Pediatr Pulmonol. 1989;7(2):116-20. doi: 10.1002/ppul.1950070212.

Abstract

Over a 37 month period 113 flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopies were performed in 77 neonates, using a variety of instruments. Thirty-six examinations were done via an endotracheal tube or tracheostomy. In addition to elective examination of the infant's airway, bronchoscopy has been found valuable in the management of emergency situations such as suspected tube blockage or malposition and difficult intubations. A video recording system is useful for teaching and documentation of abnormal findings.
